Re: Power Protection
Date: September 16, 1999

With the arrival of Hurricane Floyd, there will no doubt be numerous power related problems in the NY/NJ metropolitan area today and tomorrow. There is a likelihood that power lines will be downed by falling trees and that there will be a high level of surges and spikes, which can cause equipment damage.

To minimize the problems you encounter, for today we suggest the following:

  • Power down any unnecessary PCs before leaving the office – if they are left running, they are subject to spikes and surges and can be damaged.
  • Disconnect any modem lines or turn off the external modems on any non-critical modem connections, especially for PCs with modems. This will prevent surges from coming through the phone lines and into the PC.
  • Check your server’s UPS battery – on the front of all APC UPS’, usually to the right side, is a small picture of a battery and a series of green lights above it – if the battery is fully charged, all green lights will be on showing it as 100% charged. If not, or if any lights are on and not green on the front of the UPS, then call the CSC so we can discuss the situation. Your UPS provides surge protection to the server as well as battery backup if normal power is interrupted.

If we have provided you with your network over the last few years, your servers are power protected, and it is likely that your hubs/switches are on a UPS. It is also likely that you have a "ProtectNet" on the LAN connection to the server, and a "PTEL" cube connecting your modems to the wall – both of these prevent surges from coming into your equipment through the wiring. However, you may want to speak with us about performing a "power protection audit" to make sure your network is ready for the upcoming winter. We can offer several options, most of which are relatively inexpensive, to help ensure your network stays up and running.
