environment before patching your systems independently.

guarantee compatibility between software and hardware manufacturers
products. ************************************************************************** LAN
ADMINISTRATION BEST PRACTICES ************************************************************************** This
month, our focus is on Antivirus solutions.
Viruses are turning into an increasingly common threat,
particularly ones that are transmitted via email.
Most networks have some form of virus protection, but are far from
iron-clad in securing the network from malicious viruses.
One study estimates the cost of cleaning up a network after a virus
at $250 per computer! Here
are five things you can do to improve your networks protection from
viruses! 1.
Signatures Up to Date Antivirus
software is only as good as the signature files (also known as
pattern files) it is using. New
viruses are introduced to the world daily.
It is important that you perform weekly updates of your antivirus
signature files, and that these files be automatically distributed from
your server to the PCs on your network.
Old signature files leave your network exposed to costly disruption
and downtime. 2.
Mail Specific Agents If
you are running Microsoft Exchange or Lotus Notes/Domino, you will want to
be running the antivirus agent for this email system, in addition to the
server-based package. This is
because these systems dont expose file attachments to the file system,
and therefore a virus-infected attachment can propagate within the mail
system. These agents, such as
Network Associates GroupShield, go inside the email systems database
and scan the attachments as they come in, allowing for faster isolation
and more complete protection. Note
that GroupWise users dont need to worry about this, as the attachments
are stored within the file system and can be accessed by the antivirus
software. 3.
Real-Time Scanning Real-Time
Scanning can impose a performance hit, but it is the best way to trap
viruses on a server or PCs and prevent it from spreading.
We recommend setting it on inbound only and scheduling a
weekly scan of the whole server for Sunday mornings, or another suitable
time of low usage that does not conflict with your tape backup schedule. 4.
Firewall Protection Viruses
can get into your network in many ways it used to be that diskettes
brought from home were the main threat, but now the Internet has
supplanted that, both via email and browsers.
Viruses can even be embedded in web pages.
Implementing a firewall that can detect and block malicious Java
applets, ActiveX code and other scripts can further lock down your
environment against viruses. 5.
Outlook Security Patch If
you are running Microsoft Outlook, you are more vulnerable to viruses
because of Windows-based script programs that can access the Outlook
address book, and quickly propagate a virus email to everyone in your
address book. Microsoft has addressed this with the Outlook Security Patch
however, note that this has a price.
This patch disables Simple MAPI, which is used by many programs to
accomplish integration (case management systems, for example).
Review your programs and environment before applying this patch, to
ensure you do not break needed functionality. Hopefully
these LAN Administration Best Practices will help you keep your network
running smoothly and Worry-Free! ************************************************************************** SPECIAL
