Solution Spotlight:
Microsoft Windows Vista
Overview
Microsoft Windows Vista is the latest version
of the Windows operating system, with final code released to manufacturing in
November 2006 and general availability in January 2007.
Windows Vista was built with three primary
goals - allowing users to be Confident, Clear and Connected. Confident
refers to the reliability and security of the operating system platform, which
is significantly enhanced from Windows XP. Clear refers to the ability to
find appropriate data and programs, which is addressed through an enhanced
Explorer interface, improved search capabilities and a more intuitive interface.
Connected refers to improvements in the mobility and communications aspects of
the operating system - it is a much improved platform for mobile, notebook users
in particular.
Key
Benefits
Windows Vista provides a number
of benefits, including:
- Removal of Administrator Privileges.
Under Vista, Administrator level rights no longer need to be granted to
users to be able to perform normal activity on their computers. The
User Account Control ("UAC") feature controls this.
- More granular Policy Controls. There
are over 3000 Group Policy settings that can be applied with Windows Vista
to lock down and control the desktop, including the ability to control
access to USB drives and other potential security risks.
- Drive Encryption. Using Windows
BitLocker (Enterprise version only) the contents of a hard disk can be
encrypted to prevent unauthorized access.
- Faster Bootup and Shutdown, and Improved
State Transition (including new Sleep Mode).
- Improved Performance from SuperFetch,
ReadyBoost and ReadyDrive features.
- Better Power Management, Longer Battery
Life, Lower Power Consumption.
- Improved Browser Experience (IE7) with
better security.
- Powerful, Integrated Desktop Search.
- More Intuitive User Interface, including
new Explorer with preview of documents and more efficient navigation.
- Improved Windows Backup and Restore
functionality.
- Windows Sideshow allows access to Outlook
information from a side panel on the computer, even when the computer is
powered off (special hardware required).
- Multilanguage support through language
packs (Enterprise version only).
