Symantec Gateway Security

Overview

Symantec Gateway Security is an all-in-one appliance that combines multiple security functions into one device, to better protect networks against modern "blended threats" such as worms.  The base unit performs as a firewall, or more specifically an Application Layer Gateway/Proxy Server, but allows for add-on feature packs to be purchased to activate additional feature sets:

• Virtual Private Network (client to site/remote access);
• URL and Content Filtering;
• Intrusion Detection & Prevention;
• Antivirus and Malicious Code.

SGS allows all of these features to be implemented at the network perimeter, allowing for a defense-in-depth strategy with better gateway protection.  The product is based on refined versions of Symantec's robust security software products, and is thus a mature offering.
