Solution Spotlight: Overview Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 allows a Windows 2003 server to run multiple virtual "sessions," with different server operating systems, much like Windows Terminal Services allows multiple instances of the Windows client OS to be run within a given server. Virtual server technology can be used to consolidate multiple physical servers onto a single machine, saving space and reducing management costs. For example, development and testing labs can be consolidated into a single server, or multiple older servers can be consolidated into one, while still giving each application its own distinct execution environment. Virtual Server can also be used to migrate applications from older platforms. For example, an application that is dependant on Windows NT Server 4.0 and will not run properly, or be supported, on Windows Server 2003 can be ported using Virtual Server so the application is running inside a Windows 2003 Server, but has a Windows NT 4 execution environment.
