Microsoft Systems Management Server ("SMS")

Overview

Microsoft Microsoft Systems Management Server ("SMS") is a powerful and comprehensive desktop management system.  It provides the following functionality:

• collect a comprehensive inventory of hardware and software on the network;
• distribute software applications on a targeted basis;
• deploy Windows desktop operating systems (via the free OS Deployment Feature Pack);
• deploy and manage patches to Windows and other Microsoft applications;
• remote control PCs.

SMS uses a SQL Server database to maintain its inventory, with a wide range of pre-developed reports and the ability to customize additional reports via SQL Reporting Services.  As part of Microsoft's System Center product family, it offers compelling integration with Microsoft management offerings.
