Solution Spotlight: Overview Citrix' XenDesktop software builds off the powerful XenApp and XenServer products to provide a Virtualized Desktop Infrastructure ("VDI") solution in which desktop computing sessions (Windows XP, Vista or 7) are delivered to thin clients or PCs, while running on a centralized back-end virtualized server infrastructure (XenServer or Hyper-V). A compelling differentiator of Citrix' solution is the ICA protocol, which delivers high performance access over low-speed connections, compared to RDP-based solutions. In addition, applications can be installed onto a XenDesktop image, or streamed from a XenApp server, or delivered from a XenApp server, providing centralized management and consistent service delivery. Citrix' HDX technologies support enhanced performance for graphics intensive and multimedia computing. Clients can be thin clients, traditional PCs (including old ones that would not otherwise be able to run Vista or Windows 7) or other devices, eliminating much of the heavy client-based cost of a broad operating system upgrade. This is a "21st Century" way to upgrade to Windows 7.
